We are celebrating a fantastic step forward in our mission to promote sustainable travel and deeper connections with Shetland’s landscapes and heritage.
On 14th March 2026, the Wild Skies team took part in the Climate Action Ting at Mareel – a lively and inspiring marketplace event organised by the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub. Surrounded by a wide range of local organisations, the event provided a valuable opportunity to share ideas, build connections, and showcase our vision for low-impact, meaningful experiences across Shetland.
Thanks to overwhelming public support at the event, Wild Skies Shetland is delighted to have secured funding for a brand-new electric bike, which will be based in Unst. This exciting addition will be available for both community members and visitors to use along our Sky Trail, opening up new, environmentally-friendly ways to explore the island.
Alongside the bike, we will be developing a dedicated cycling leaflet designed to encourage car-free exploration of Unst. This guide will highlight key Sky Stops and help users experience the island at a slower pace, fostering a deeper connection to its unique history, culture, and natural environment. Promoting cycling is another important part of our commitment to low-carbon tourism and sustainable travel.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Shetland Bike Project for lending us an electric bike during the event, and to everyone who voted for us – YOUR support has made this possible. Next steps include planning route ‘reccies’ to identify the most accessible and rewarding Sky Stops by bike. With spring arriving and longer days ahead, we look forward to working with volunteers to test routes and help shape the final guide.
