We were delighted to welcome this year’s Shetland Nature Wild and Woolly tour group to Unst.
Following a morning walk at Hermaness, guides Kate Humble and Jon Dunn brought the group to the Unst Heritage Centre, where local knitters shared their knowledge of the intricate tradition and craftsmanship behind Shetland lace knitting.
After the ever-popular knit-and-natter session, visitors explored the Viking longhouse and replica longship the Skidbladner in Haroldswick before heading out into the famous Unst winds to discover the wildflowers of the Keen of Hamar Nature Reserve.
One of the day’s highlights was finding the tiny and beautiful Edmonston’s Chickweed – a flower found nowhere else on Earth except Unst! If you’ve never seen it before, now is the perfect time to look, as it flowers mainly during May and June.
As the rain arrived, we took shelter at Bobby’s Bus Shelter before travelling to Uyeasound, where Wild Skies Trustee Fabien Kuntz rounded off the visit with a fascinating presentation about his remarkable meteorite collection.
