Studying rocks!

Following her fascinating presentation ‘Looking into Deep Time: what can meteorites tell us about the formation of the Solar System?’ to the Shetland Geological Society in Lerwick, as part of the Scottish geology festival, we were delighted to welcome Jodie Sutherland to Unst this May.

Originally from Shetland, Jodie recently began a PhD in Planetary Science at the University of Manchester, specialising in meteoritics. As part of her research, she is seeking examples of a specific meteorite classification known as chondrites, and our Trustee Fabien was pleased to provide several specimens from his own collection for study.

We’re especially excited that Jodie plans to return to Unst this autumn to collaborate with Wild Skies on an outreach event with the local school. Her goal is to inspire young people across the islands to explore careers in planetary science and space research – and we can’t wait to welcome her back.
