Summer solstice sunrise at Skaw beach

Who was the most northerly person in the UK at sunrise on 21st June? For a brief moment, we thought it was our very own Wild Skies Shetland Trustee, Fabien Kuntz!

Fabien was on Skaw Beach, Unst, at the remarkably early hour of 3.38am to witness sunrise on the summer solstice — or simmer dim, as it’s known in Shetland — when the sun barely dips below the horizon.

His early-morning adventure was part of a live contribution to Paddy O’Connell’s Radio 4 programme Broadcasting House, where he appeared just before Astronomer Royal Professor Catherine Heymans.

You can listen to the programme online, with Fabien’s contribution beginning at 22:58.

However, shortly after we shared the story on Facebook, Nigel Buckley got in touch to report that he and his partner had reached the most northerly point of Hermaness NNR at 3.28am – ten minutes earlier than Fabien’s claim! Congratulations to Nigel for braving the wild weather and earning the title. It must have been a truly unforgettable experience.
