Scenic Skies
The Sky Trail was created by Wild Skies Shetland, a registered charity run by community volunteers who are passionate about the natural wonders of Unst.
We want to share the spectacular year-round skies above Unst with everyone.
From the epic Northern Lights in the winter months to the vast expanse of the summer skies when the sun barely sets, it’s always a treat to turn your gaze upwards in Unst!
If you’ve not been lucky enough to spot the Northern Lights, try our Virtual Reality Experience. This experience is available at Unst Heritage Centre from May to September and at the Leisure Centre in Baltasound from October to April.
Visit Daytime
During the day the Sky Stops are your guide to exploring the island; learn about our skies, listen to local tales, enjoy the sounds of Unst and find out more about our Viking ancestors.
VISIT AT NIGHT
Come back when it’s dark and you might see the Mirrie Dancers (the Northern Lights). The best months are from late September to March when the nights are longer.
By car or bike
Explore by car or bike, with some stops best reached on foot. Allow at least four hours to visit all 13 stops, or choose one of four shorter mini trails on our map.
Sky Trail Stops
There are 13 stops featuring art, music, local dialect, poems, and information. Each includes a QR code linking to our website; some also have a bench and a listening post.
Use the map below to navigate around. If you are visiting us online, the content on these pages is just a taster of what you could experience if you come to Unst.
